Sochi is in Russia and is hosting the 22nd Winter Olympics, beginning February 7. Australia has a 60 strong team of hopefuls embarking on their destiny here in an Olympiad that will long be known for being a bit on the warm side, and a lot on the homophobic side. But what else do we know about the host city? Read on and watch your knowledge of Sochi become faster, higher, stronger. Ok, ok, in the very least, stronger.
Sochi is the warmest ever host of a Winter Olympiad
The city is described as having a 'humid sub-tropical climate' which in Summer reaches temps of up to 39 degrees celcius with an average of 28 degrees - not dissimilar to here at home.
For the games starting this week however, we can be expecting an average of 10 degrees of a day, and a cooler 3 degrees of an evening.
The XXII Olympiad will be the most expensive in history
With an original budget of $12 billion, the total cost of these games has just edged over the $51 billion mark.

Sochi is a fair hike from Moscow

The city is 37 hours from Moscow by train.
That's right, hours. 37 of them.

Sochi is known as The Russian Riviera
Home to many vacation homes - or dachas as they are known - of wealthy Russians; oligarchs and socialites alike, Sochi has even earn itself the nickname, 'The Russian Riviera'.
The city is even home to the favoured dacha of Joseph Stalin. You may have read about him? Stalin can still be found (in wax form) chillin' out, maxin', relaxin' all cool, as you can see here...
